How Anxiety Impacts Our Lives

Anxiety is a pervasive condition that can have a profound effect on various aspects of our lives. It goes beyond the occasional worry or stress we all experience and becomes a persistent and excessive presence that interferes with our daily functioning and well-being. If left untreated, anxiety can significantly impact our mental and emotional health, hindering our ability to fully enjoy life and reach our fullest potential.

Anxiety can present itself as:

  • Excessive anxiety or worry most days
  • Restlessness or feeling as being on edge
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty falling, staying, or restless sleep
  • Muscle tension or jaw clenching
  • Physical symptoms (e.g., racing heart, stomach pain, shortness of breath, nausea, shaky hands, etc.)

What is OCD and How Do I Know If I Have it?

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Obsessions are defined as distressing intrusive thoughts or images that you feel you cannot control. Compulsions are defined as urges, repetitive behaviors, or mental acts that are performed to alleviate the anxiety associated with the obsessions. These compulsions may include, excessive cleaning, checking, organizing, counting, praying, avoidance behaviors, seeking reassurance, replaying memories or events, and more. If these symptoms are time-consuming, cause significant distress, and interfere with your daily life, it may be an indication of OCD.

Our Approach to Treating OCD and Anxiety

At Rainier Center for Mental Health and Wellness, we take a comprehensive approach to treat OCD and anxiety. Our therapists utilize evidence-based therapies such as Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), a subtype of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). ERP involves gradually exposing you to the anxiety, obsession, and fear through images, memories, physical sensations, and real life situations. While CBT/DBT helps identify emotions and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, ERP focuses on getting comfortable with those thought patterns rather than challenging or trying to stop them. While using ERP, we incorporate mindfulness techniques and, when necessary, collaborate with psychiatrists or nurse practitioners for medication management to help you gain control of your life. Through these approaches, we help you develop healthier coping strategies, begin to control your mind rather than your mind controlling you, and break free from the cycle of anxiety and obsessions,
